Contact Angle Measurement System

Contact Angle Measurement Systemis a tool to study the wetting behaviour of a liquid on Solid. Phenomenon like spreadability, absorption, adsorption, dissolution can be studied by contact angle measurement devices. Different methods are used for measurement which are classified as follows:

Sessile Drop Method:The optical contact angle method is used to determine wetting properties of a localized region on a solid surface.

Dynamic Whilmey Method:A method for calculating average advancing and receding angles on solid of uniform geometry.

Single Fiber Wilhelmy Method:Dynamic Wilhelmy method applied to single fibers to measure advancing and receding contact angles.

Powder Contact Angle method:Enables measurement of average contact angle sorption speed for powders and other porous materials. Change of weight as a function of time is measured.

Top View Distance Method:Measurement of the contact angle from the top using mirror image of light spot which are reflected by the curved surface of the drop.

DSA100HP is our high-quality solution for the precise measurement of contact angle and surface tension and interfacial tension under high pressures and temperatures, primarily for tertiary oil recovery.

The DSA100HP combines our Drop Shape Analyzer – DSA100 for optical drop shape analysis with a high-quality measuring cell for high-pressure applications ranges for 40/690 and 1750 bars . It determines the surface tension, and analyzes the wetting of oil-bearing rock by surfactant solutions under the extreme pressure and temperature conditions found in reservoirs. The results help in the extraction of oil from layers of rock in the most effective manner using tertiary oil recovery (EOR) methods such as steam or surfactant flooding, and thereby increase the yield.

The instrument equally reliably measures the wettability by gases which liquidize under pressure, for example for optimizing extraction processes with carbon dioxide. The precise measurement of surface tension under storage conditions using the DSA100HP is very informative in the characterization of a surfactant solution which is used for flooding a crude oil reservoir. This should be as low as possible to ensure that the rock is well wetted.

Versatile options for dosing and measuring

With the aid of the dosing units of the DSA100HP, the drop liquid and the surrounding phase easily reach the inside of the high pressure cell. Rock samples can be positioned from the outside to measure the wettability at different positions while maintaining the pressure. The flexible design also allows contact angle measurements in a surrounding liquid phase. Precise temperature control up to 250 °C is achieved by means of an electric heater.

Reliable drop shape analysis thanks to high imaging quality

The DSA100HP features a high-resolution camera and a quality zoom lens for accurate display of the drop with optimum size. The high image quality that this achieves leads to a precisely measured contact angle or surface/interfacial tension. Combined with the intelligent image evaluation algorithm of the ADVANCE software, drop shape analysis with the instrument provides exact results.

Drop Shape Analyzer DSA30R perform measurements of Interfacial Rheology and gives the relevant results for optimizing products and processes.

The measuring principle of the DSA30R involves evaluating video images of drops or gas bubbles at a dosing needle to measure the surface or interfacial tension (SFI/IFT). The interface size is sinusoidally changed during this process. The SFT/IFT is measured as a function of the surface change and is also sinusoidal in the case of samples containing surfactants.

The dosing unit’s extremely precise piezo drive enables exact sine waves in a frequency spectrum of 0.001 to 20 Hz, so the measurements cover a very wide dynamic range.

Many innovations around the DSA30R turn formerly complex interfacial rheological analytics into an easy-to-perform method with quick sample changing. The filled glass syringe is inserted in a few simple steps and coupled automatically to the dosing feed.

To determine the influence of temperature, or to make investigations of high-viscosity systems easier, the syringe is embedded in a temperature-controlled sleeve for measurements between -10 and 70 °C. The temperature of the surrounding phase can also be controlled. Moreover, the start of certain processes such as the beginning of oscillation can be automatically linked to the target temperature being reached. This ensures reproducible conditions without user intervention.

Precise wettability analysis on extremely small surfaces.

The Micro configuration of our DSA30 was specially designed to investigate the contact angle on surfaces which require very small drops for analyzing them. The DSA30M solves this task with a picoliter dosing system and powerful microscope optics. The result is a versatile instrument that provides precise contact angle and surface free energy results for samples such as hairs or the screw windings of dental implants.

Tasks and applications

- Wettability measurement on small electronic parts
- Contact angle on hair and synthetic single fibers
- Investigating the biocompatibility of dental implants
- Wetting of nozzles of an inkjet print head

Measuring methods and options

- Contact angle between a liquid and a solid
- Surface free energy from contact angles of two test liquids using all common models
- Static contact angle, advancing angle

Perfectly equipped for microdrop analysis

The available dosing units for 20 or 60 picoliter minimum volume dispense microscopically small drops of test liquid onto the sample. The fine positioning of the dosing unit and the sample allows precise placement of the drops. Working with two test liquids also enables the surface free energy to be calculated. This result provides important information for the adhesion, e.g. of fiber coatings.

Providing optimum image quality for precise analysis

Thanks to the high-quality microscopic lens and powerful illumination, the DSA30M has high image quality that enables reliable measurement results from image analysis. With the help of the instrument’s high-speed camera, even ultra-small, rapidly evaporating drops can be easily analyzed.

Contact Angle Measurement by Wilhelmy Method

Product Brochure

The Wilhelmy plate method measures:

  • Surface tension (SFT) of a liquid,

  • Interfacial tension (IFT) between liquids,

  • Contact angle (θ) between liquid and solid.

A thin plate is dipped vertically into the liquid, and the force FFF on it is measured. The force relates to surface tension and contact angle by:

F=σ×L×cos⁡θF = \sigma \times L \times \cos \thetaF=σ×L×cosθ
  • σ\sigmaσ = surface or interfacial tension,

  • LLL = wetted perimeter of the plate,

  • θ\thetaθ = contact angle.

For SFT/IFT:
A platinum plate is used, with contact angle ≈ 0°, so

σ=FL\sigma = \frac{F}{L}σ=LF

For contact angle:
Dip the solid plate in a liquid with known σ\sigmaσ, then calculate

cos⁡θ=Fσ×L\cos \theta = \frac{F}{\sigma \times L}cosθ=σ×LF

The method is static and can measure dynamic contact angles by immersing and withdrawing the plate. The wetted length LLL must be known and constant.

Contact Angle Measurement by Washburn Method

Request Callback

Get Latest Price

The Washburn method measures the contact angle and surface free energy of porous materials like powders and textiles by observing how a liquid is drawn up into the material via capillary action.

A glass tube filled with powder is dipped in a test liquid, and the liquid’s mass uptake over time is recorded. Treating the powder as many tiny capillaries, the relationship between mass squared (m2m^2m2) and time (ttt) is linear and described by the Washburn equation:

m2=cσcos⁡θηρ×tm^2 = \frac{c \sigma \cos \theta}{\eta \rho} \times tm2=ηρcσcosθ×t
  • ccc is a capillary constant related to pore size and packing,

  • θ\thetaθ is the contact angle,

  • σ,η,ρ\sigma, \eta, \rhoσ,η,ρ are the liquid’s surface tension, viscosity, and density.

To find ccc, measure with a fully wetting liquid (contact angle 0∘0^\circ0∘), then use this to calculate θ\thetaθ for other liquids.

Notes:

  • Powder packing must be consistent since ccc depends on bulk density.

  • Angles above 90° cannot be measured (no wetting). For these, drop shape analysis is used instead.
